Past classes and Technology and the learner

Thank you for a good class tonight.  Past classes that had some missing folks are linked below.

HW:

Weekly App Practical

Imagine you are told you have a student with a disability entering your classroom next year.  You may define the scope of their disability.  Then come up with a plan of how you will make them welcome and supported in your classroom.

Class Four- Student as Scribe

 Great discussion!

Remember to expand this idea of scribing as much as possible.  Journaling, Logging, creating data sets, information manipulation, note taking, reflection, progress monitoring,  assessment (but don't go too far there, we have a WAP for assessment.)

Questions? Email me.

HW:

1. Draft of WAP for Scribing.

2. Add to Growth plan.

3. Read chapter on Research in November book.

Class Three - Student as Tutorial designer

Sorry I was late!  Hopefully you got a good class anyway.

I do want to clarify-

Alan November provides a very small idea of what students teaching students looks like.  Imagine what it would take to get your students to feel they were in the drivers seat.  It will differ depending on the students, but

Find an audience they care about. (Purpose)

Help them find a way in to choosing the subject or manner of presentation- But don't give them a list to choose from!  They will not like that!  Autonomy is about choice and creativity.

Mastery comes from scaffolding presentation skills, allowing them to practice and reflecting on their work.

Can you find a way to do this for your students?

HW

1. Complete a Weekly App Practical on Student as Tutorial Designer.  It doesn't have to have technology in it if the student is too young or otherwise incapable of using it.

2. Read chapter 3- Student as Scribe

See you soon!

Class two

Lovely class everyone.  I love your participation.

Here is your homework.

1. Add to your growth plan.

2. Read the first two chapters of "Who Owns the Learning?"  Digital Learning Farm and Student As Tutorial Designer.

3. Write your first Weekly App Practical.

The best way to approach it is as follows.

a. define a problem you are having.

b. search for tech solutions to that problem.

c. lightly use or review multiple apps/systems for solving your problem

d.  pick one app/ system and fully invest. Apply it and try it out in real life.

e. reflect on the process, what did you learn?

f. Write up a summary of the process in your blog as if you were leading someone else through it.

Remember to use pictures to illustrate.

Do not do a how to.  This is not a tutorial on how to use an app.  It is a recording of your experience applying and integrating the app in to your life.

Have a nice break!

First class success!

Hello Folks!

Great first class- despite the technical issue.   I'm so glad we have such a range of experience and subject matter.  And that people talked!  It shows how important education is to you that you think about these things deeply and passionately.

I'm really excited for this class.

Here is your home work.

1. Use the link to the right to access the "Example Blogs".  Pick 3-4 that you like and resonate with you.

2. Write a blog post using this prompt.

Create a model classroom that you will refer to for the rest of the course. Include any information that will be relevant to the teaching of those students. If you think the economic status of the student matters for your classroom, enter that information. If you think race, cultural background, gender identity, religion, etc. matter- include it. Base it as much on reality as possible. If you want to work in Boston, try and find out the class size and make up of a class you are likely to teach.

Make a seating chart that is typical of a classroom that you have or will encounter

Consider, How many students? What age group? What subject?  What abilities do they have? Add in ELL or low performing students?  Add in behavior issues.   Add in anything else you think might make a difference!

Post this to your blog!

3. Finish watching the TED talk from Sugata Mitra

See you soon!
